august August

As Sussex sinks into somnambulism and Hassocks and Hurst holiday the Purple Carrot continues apace and we’d like to draw your attention to a few things that we will be hosting until also abandoning ship on the 16th to return refreshed and ready for an awesome autumn.

Each event starts at 8pm. You are welcome to turn up to the event on the night BUT, if you can, let us know you are coming beforehand to avoid disappointment if over-subscribed – especially with the wine-tasting.

Welcome to “Everything at 8”

Thursday 7 – Trivia quiz;

Friday 8 – Pop Quiz;

Wednesday 13 – Film Night;

Thursday 14 – Wine Tasting;

Obviously we’re also open as usual during the week and the 3 versions of Iced coffee, 4 types of fruit smoothies and multitude of milkshakes (especially the fresh banana with hint of vanilla) to have in or take-away are proving very popular at taking the edge off the heat of the day – and cost about half what you’d pay in Brighton or London – just create your own ambiance :))

Thursday 7  Aug – Trivia Quiz – £2.50pp now with added jokers.  The dearly loved trivia quiz gets a bit of a make-over (Liz’s idea – so complaints/compliments to her after trying it out) each of the smaller bite sized rounds now have the added incentive of a joker to play when you think you have done well, and a bit more of a vague theme tied-in too.  The jackpot 3 in 2 minute quiz is now up to £232 and surely ripe for winning… Throw in a cheeseboard and a bottle of wine and you have yourself an evening.

Friday 8 Aug – Popular Paul’s Pop Quiz – £4pp (£8pp with food – I’m thinking curry this month). Get ready for some special “sounds of the summer” as Paul pulls the plug on mediocrity. The quipping quiz-meister is bound to have something surprising up his frilly sleeves. AND if it doesn’t go the night before the jackpot quiz pot will be up to about £250!   Yes I know it’s always the 3rd Friday of the month BUT it’s the 2nd Friday this month just so we can accommodate everyone’s holiday’s, but not Jan’s “getting larrrgered up night” I’m afraid.

Wednesday 13 Aug – Film night – The Grand Budapest Hotel – Back by popular demand with a new seating layout we begin our new monthly “films for film fans” slot – arthouse, world cinema, farce, comedy, drama, thriller, adventure – you name the film, we’ll try and put it on…and if no-one comes then we’ll stop again (there’s no point flogging a dead horse in a one horse town!)  –THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL recounts the adventures of Gustave H., a legendary concierge at a famous European hotel between the wars, and Zero Moustafa, the lobby boy who becomes his most trusted friend. The story involves the theft and recovery of a priceless Renaissance painting and the battle for an enormous family fortune — all against the back-drop of a suddenly and dramatically changing Continent (8.2/10 IMDb)

Thursday 14 August – Wine Matters – Wine Wars Part II – ENGLAND V GERMANY. Spittoon’s ready. After a successful first round evening in July where Australia trounced France to go through to the semi-final stage, up and coming England take on the black tower’s of German Riesling and Gewürztraminer in a battle that perhaps isn’t just the forgone conclusion of German dominance we’ve come to expect and love. The evening  includes food from the two competing countries and some very good wines to try out supplied by Hurstpierpoint’s South Downs Cellars with the added bonus of Giles chatting on about “tones” and “zing”, – spit or swallow the choice is yours. £15 – please book in advance

Saturday 16 Aug – the trailer tent is rudely awakened from its peaceful dilapidation in the garage-shed and hauled off to France for 2 weeks of FUN.  Back on 2 September
