The Purple Carrot, in association with South Downs Cellars, presents
Wine Wars’ of Hassocks 2016

A 2 part drama over the whole year

Part 1 – The Purple Carrot Wine List

Last year Australia triumphed once again but we had a damned fine trip finding out who would be our eventual winners. We’ve listed our best wines of 2015 and these are all available at South Downs cellars, at pretty good prices too considering how damned tasty they are

This year to kick us off we go a bit introspective and navel gazing. We think we have a pretty good wine list so we’re testing this theory by battling it out…WITH OURSELVES

Thursday 28 JanuaryWhite v White – our current crop of 5 against a carefully selected bunch of wannabes – Have our tastes remained the same or will it be out with the old and in with the new? – £17.50

Thursday 25 FebruaryRed v Red – with the added addition of a bit of steak sampling too this promises to be one of those evenings! (A veggie option can be provided)  – £20.00

Thursday 7 April  – Bubbling over -We’ve only got the one fizzy at the moment but it’s pretty darned good, so lets see what Giles can come up with to best it. Also on trial are both chocolate and cheese local and lovely  – £20

PART 2 – Hassocks’ Favourite Grape Variety

Over the second part of the year we will be testing the palate to see which variety of grape is most suited to the north side of the South Downs

What is your favourite grape variety? We aim to provide a (less than) definitive guide to the best single grape varieties of wine in the world. Obviously there are gazziliions of blends out there so we are stripping it back to basics to take a look at 12 single varieties (both red and white) to test the palate
GRAPES INVOLVED ARE

  • Whites: Riesling ; Sauvignon Blanc; Pinot Grigio/Gris; Chardonnay; Viognier; Chenin Blanc
  • Reds: Shiraz/Syrah; Pinot Noir; Cabernet Sauvignon; Malbec; Merlot; Tempranillo

Each Month 4 Whites and 4 Reds of the same Grape variety
Top 2 scoring varieties go head to head to choose No1 White and Red.

First up – 6 May – Riesling & Shiraz/Syrah

16 June – Sauvignon Blanc & Pinot Noir – perfect summer combinations.
